February 16: Innovation Day: -- An annual recognition of the role that new knowledge plays in making a country more advanced and powerful. This day is a great way to not only make the existing crop of scientists feel valued and appreciated, but it also inspires young people to pursue a career in technology and innovation. This special day celebrates the achievements of the scientific community and opens the doors to new technologies, inventions, and careers for the younger generation. Whenever an organization or an individual introduces a new service or product that can simplify a particular task for people, it is known as innovation. Innovation Day is one such event that acknowledges new ideas and discoveries. The main idea behind this day is to appreciate the efforts of those inventors who are bringing innovation and change in the field of science and technology. The Science History Institute and the Society of Chemical Industry created this day to acknowledge those creators who have made revolutionary inventions in the past that are still as useful as they were years ago. Innovation Day also motivates young children to be experimental and inventive in their fields of interest. The term 'innovation' started to gain popularity in the 19th century. It was in the same period when the Industrial Revolution for economic growth and development started in Great Britain. During this era, the main focus of inventors was on technical innovations. Moreover, the rise of consumerism culture that began in the 1700s and spread in various parts of the world in the 1920s also encouraged different business organizations to come up with innovative goods and services. Labs for research and experimentation were also established in the U.S. and European countries that were funded by granting agencies and governments. On Innovation Day, aspiring innovators, businesses, and scientists come together on a single platform to develop sustainable products and services for future generations. February 16: BBS Day -- February 16, 1978: The History Of The Computer: Online Service Providers: Pre-World Wide Web Online Services: CBBS (Computerized Bulletin Board System): -- The first computer bulletin board system, CBBS (Computerized Bulletin Board System), is created in Chicago, Illinois by Ward Christensen and Randy Suess to allow them and other computer hobbyists to exchange information between each other, and thereby create file transfer and other protocols that are now part of the internet's infrastructure. In January 1978, Chicago was hit by the Great Blizzard of 1978, which dumped record amounts of snow throughout the Midwest. Among those caught in the storm were Christensen and Suess, who were members of CACHE, the Chicago Area Computer Hobbyists' Exchange. They had met at that computer club in the mid-1970s and become friends. Christensen had created a file transfer protocol for sending binary computer files through modem connections, which was called, simply, MODEM. Later improvements to the program motivated a name change into the now familiar XMODEM. The success of this project encouraged further experiments. CACHE members frequently shared programs and had long been discussing some form of file transfer using modems, and Christensen was naturally at the center of these discussions; however, Suess in particular was skeptical of accomplishing such a project by a volunteer committee. Christensen and Suess became enamored of the extended idea of creating a computerized answering machine and message center, which would allow members to call in with their then-new modems and leave announcements for upcoming meetings. However, they needed some quiet time to set aside for such a project, and the blizzard gave them that time. Christensen worked on the software and Suess cobbled together an S-100 computer to put the program on. They had a working version within two weeks, but claimed soon afterwards that it had taken four so that it wouldn't seem like a "rushed" project. Time and tradition have settled that date to be February 16, 1978. Christensen and Suess described their innovation in an article entitled "Hobbyist Computerized Bulletin Board" in the November 1978 issue of Byte magazine. Because the Internet was still small and not available to most computer users, users had to dial CBBS directly using a modem. Also because the CBBS hardware and software supported only a single modem for most of its existence, users had to take turns accessing the system, each hanging up when done to let someone else have access. Despite these limitations, the system was seen as very useful, and ran for many years and inspired the creation of many other bulletin board systems. Ward & Randy would often watch the users while they were online and comment or go into chat if the subject warranted. At times, online users wondered if Ward & Randy actually existed. The program had many forward thinking ideas, now accepted as canonical in the creation of message bases or "forums". As Christensen and Suess went their separate ways, the CBBS name lived on, and survives to an extent as a web-based forum on Suess' website, chinet.com. Christensen's version of CBBS, called "Ward's Board", closed in the early 1990s. On February 16, 2003, Chicago's Mayor Richard M. Daley declared the day "BBS" day in honor of the world's first BBS being created 25 years ago that day. An article with a photo of Ward and the CBBS hardware appeared shortly thereafter in the Chicago Tribune. There is still at least one active CBBS system as of August 2020. February 16, 1804: Crime: Organized Crime: Piracy: The Barbary Pirates (The Barbary Corsairs, The Ottoman Corsairs): The Barbary Wars: The First Barbary War (1801-1805) (The Tripolitan War, The Barbary Coast War): -- Stephen Decatur leads a raid to burn the pirate-held frigate USS Philadelphia. The First Barbary War (1801-1805), also known as the Tripolitanian War and the Barbary Coast War, was the first of two Barbary Wars, in which the United States and Sweden fought against the four North African states known collectively as the "Barbary States". Three of these were nominal provinces of the Ottoman Empire, but in practice autonomous: Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis. The fourth was the independent Sultanate of Morocco. The cause of the U.S. participation was pirates from the Barbary States seizing American merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom, demanding the U.S. pay tribute to the Barbary rulers. United States President Thomas Jefferson refused to pay this tribute. Sweden had been at war with the Tripolitans since 1800. On 10 May 1801, the Pasha of Tripoli declared war on the U.S., not through any formal written documents but in the customary Barbary manner of cutting down the flagstaff in front of the U.S. Consulate. Although Congress never voted on a formal declaration of war, they did respond by authorizing President Jefferson to instruct the commanders of armed American vessels to seize all vessels and goods of the Pasha of Tripoli "and also to cause to be done all such other acts of precaution or hostility as the state of war will justify." In 1802, in response to Jefferson's request for authority to deal with the pirates, Congress passed "An act for the protection of commerce and seamen of the United States against the Tripolitan cruisers", authorizing the President to "employ such of the armed vessels of the United States as may be judged requisite_ for protecting effectually the commerce and seamen thereof on the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean and adjoining seas." The U.S Navy went unchallenged on the sea, but still the question remained undecided. Jefferson pressed the issue the following year, with an increase in military force and deployment of many of the navy's best ships to the region throughout 1802. Argus, Chesapeake, Constellation, Constitution, Enterprise, Intrepid, Philadelphia and Syren all saw service during the war under the overall command of Preble. Throughout 1803, Preble set up and maintained a blockade of the Barbary ports and executed a campaign of raids and attacks against the cities' fleets. In October 1803, Tripoli's fleet captured USS Philadelphia intact after the frigate ran aground on a reef while patrolling Tripoli harbor. Efforts by the Americans to float the ship while under fire from shore batteries and Tripolitan Naval units failed. The ship, her captain, William Bainbridge, and all officers and crew were taken ashore and held as hostages. Philadelphia was turned against the Americans and anchored in the harbor as a gun battery. On the night of 16 February 1804, Lieutenant Stephen Decatur led a small detachment of U.S. Marines aboard the captured Tripolitan ketch rechristened USS Intrepid, thus deceiving the guards on Philadelphia to float close enough to board her. Decatur's men stormed the ship and overpowered the Tripolitan sailors. With fire support from the American warships, the Marines set fire to Philadelphia, denying her use by the enemy. On April 27th, 1805, United States Marines and Berbers attacked the Tripolitan city of Derna (The "shores of Tripoli" part of the Marines' Hymn), beginning The Battle Of Derna. The "Marines' Hymn" is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps, introduced by the first Director of USMC Band, Francesco Maria Scala. It is the oldest official song in the United States Armed Forces. The "Marines' Hymn" is typically sung at the position of attention as a gesture of respect. However, the third verse is also used as a toast during formal events, such as the birthday ball and other ceremonies. February 16, 1903: #BOTD: #HBD! Edgar Bergen, American actor, ventriloquist, comedian and radio performer (d. September 30, 1978) is #born Edgar John Berggren in Chicago, Illinois. Edgar Bergen was best known for his proficiency in ventriloquism and his characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He is also the father of actress Candice Bergen. He was one of five children and the younger of two sons of Swedish immigrants Nilla Svensdotter (nee Osberg) and Johan Henriksson Berggren. He lived on a farm near Decatur, Michigan until he was four, when his family returned to Sweden, where he learned the language. He taught himself ventriloquism from a pamphlet called "The Wizard's Manual" when he was 11, after his family had returned to Chicago. After his father died, when Edgar was just 16, he went out to work as an apprentice accountant, a furnace stoke, a player-piano operator, and a projectionist in a silent-movie house. Edgar would so impress the famous ventriloquist Harry Lester that he gave the teenager almost daily lessons for three months in the fundamentals of ventriloquism. In the fall of 1919, Edgar paid Chicago woodcarver Theodore Mack 36 USD to sculpt a likeness of a rascally red-headed Irish newspaperboy he knew. The head went on a dummy named Charlie McCarthy, which became Bergen's lifelong sidekick. He had created the body himself, using a nine-inch length of broomstick for the backbone, and rubber bands and cords to control the lower jaw mechanism of the mouth. He gave his first public performance at Waveland Avenue Congregational Church located on the northeast corner of Waveland and Janssen. His first performances were in vaudeville, at which point he legally changed his last name to the easier-to-pronounce "Bergen". He worked in one-reel movie shorts, but his real success was on the radio. He and Charlie were seen at a New York party by Elsa Maxwell for Noel Coward, who recommended them for an engagement at the famous Rainbow Room. It was there that two producers saw Bergen and Charlie perform. They then recommended them for a guest appearance on Rudy Vallee's program. Their initial appearance (December 17, 1936) was so successful that the following year they were given regular cast rolls as part of The Chase and Sanborn Hour. Under various sponsors (and two different networks), they were on the air from May 9, 1937 to July 1, 1956. The popularity of a ventriloquist on radio, when one could see neither the dummies nor his skill, surprised and puzzled many critics, then and now. Even knowing that Bergen provided the voice, listeners perceived Charlie as a genuine person, but only through artwork rather than photos could the character be seen as truly lifelike. Thus, in 1947, Sam Berman caricatured Bergen and McCarthy for the network's glossy promotional book, NBC Parade of Stars: As Heard Over Your Favorite NBC Station. Bergen and McCarthy are sometimes credited with "saving the world" because, on the night of October 30, 1938, when Orson Welles performed his War Of The Worlds radio play that panicked many listeners, most of the American public had instead tuned to Bergen and McCarthy on another station and never heard Welles' play. Conversely, it has also been theorized that Bergen inadvertently contributed to the hysteria. When the musical portion of Bergen's show, The Chase and Sanborn Hour, aired approximately 12 minutes into the show, many listeners adjusted their dial and found the War Of The Worlds presentation already underway with a realistic-sounding reporter detailing terrible events. In the fall (autumn) of 1948, Edgar and Charlie faced serious competition from ABC's "jackpot" quiz show, Stop the Music, which suddenly drew more listeners (Fred Allen faced a similar problem because he directly appeared before them). In December 1948, Edgar announced he was temporarily "retiring" from radio, admitting that Stop the Music was too popular to compete with. His final NBC broadcast was on December 26, 1948. In October 1949, Bergen went to CBS, with a new weekly program, The Charlie McCarthy Show, sponsored by Coca-Cola. After their sponsorship ended in June 1952, Richard Hudnut, on behalf of "Lanolin Plus" cosmetics, primarily sustained the series until the end of the 1953-54 season. In October 1954, Kraft Foods sponsored a new Edgar Bergen Hour. After Kraft's departure, the series continued with participating sponsors as a 55-minute series in the fall of 1955. However, because more people were watching television on Sunday nights than listened to radio (and advertisers preferred to sponsor TV shows by then), the series finally ended on July 1, 1956. Bergen and his alter ego Charlie McCarthy were given top billing in several films, including the Technicolor extravaganza The Goldwyn Follies (1938), opposite the Ritz Brothers. That year they also appeared in You Can't Cheat an Honest Man with W. C. Fields. At the height of their popularity in 1937, Bergen was presented an Honorary Oscar (in the form of a wooden Oscar statuette, the only wooden Oscar given so far) for his creation of Charlie McCarthy. Bergen, along with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd were also featured in the 1938 film Letter of Introduction. As an actor alone, Bergen portrayed the timid suitor of the sister Trina in I Remember Mama (1948), and appeared in Captain China (1949), The Hanged Man (1964) and Don't Make Waves (1967). Other film roles for the team include Look Who's Laughing (1941) and Here We Go Again (1942), both with Fibber McGee and Molly. Charlie McCarthy wore a US Army uniform in Stage Door Canteen (1943) with Mortimer Snerd. Bergen and McCarthy were also featured in Disney's Fun and Fancy Free (1947). He later cameoed in all-star films such as The Phynx (1970), Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976), and The Muppet Movie (1979). In 1977, Bergen had made a guest appearance on a second-season episode of The Muppet Show, the highly acclaimed television comedy/variety program produced by Jim Henson who considered Bergen a major inspiration. His daughter Candice had also guest-starred on the show during its first season. Bergen died shortly after filming his Muppet Movie scene, which was also his final public appearance, and was subsequently dedicated to him. In 2009 Bergen was featured in the comedy documentary 'I'm No Dummy, directed by Bryan W. Simon. In 1941, Bergen met 19-year-old Frances Westerman, a young fashion model, who had graduated from Los Angeles High School the prior year. He spotted her in the live audience of his radio program, where she was the guest of one of his staff members. From Westerman's front-row seat, her legs caught the attention of 38-year-old Bergen, who asked to meet her. A long-distance courtship, spanning years, ensued. The two were eventually married, in Mexico, on June 28, 1945. On May 9, 1946, Frances gave birth to future actress Candice Bergen, whose first performances were on Bergen's radio show. The couple's second child was film and television editor Kris Bergen. Frances also acted, appearing in several movies, co-starring in the 1958 television series Yancy Derringer, and guest-starring in many other shows. In mid-September 1978, Bergen announced that he was retiring after more than 50 years in show business, and sending his monocled, top-hatted partner, Charlie McCarthy, to the National Museum of American History, at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He opened at Caesar's Palace Hotel Las Vegas on September 27, for a two-week "Farewell to Show Business" engagement. Three days later, on September 30, 1978, he died of kidney disease. Bergen was interred with his parents (who are buried under their true surname of "Berggren"), in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California. In his will, according to Candice Bergen's memoir, 'A Fine Romance,' he left his daughter nothing, but bequeathed his dummy, Charlie McCarthy, 10K USD. "I'd chased my father's approval all my life, and here was proof I'd never get it," the actress wrote. "I was hurt, shocked, when I discovered he had left me out of his will." She further explained that her father had provided this inheritance for the dummy, so that the funds could be managed, invested, and reinvested to provide for his future performances. She said her father wrote in his will: "I make this provision for sentimental reasons, which to me are vital due to the association with Charlie McCarthy, who has been my constant companion and who has taken on the character of a real person and from whom I have never been separated even for a day." Throughout the book, she suggested that her father seemed to have a stronger kinship with Charlie than with her. The dummy "dominated" her childhood, she explained, and even had his own bedroom in their house. "Those were unique circumstances to grow up in," she wrote. "Sometimes I have to give myself credit for being a functional human being. I knew my father loved me, but with his Swedish reserve, it wasn't his nature to tell me." On October 2, 2006, Edgar Bergen's wife of 33 years, Frances Westerman Bergen, died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, aged 84, from undisclosed causes. Unlike her husband, she is buried in Forrest Lawn memorial park (Hollywood Hills) . In 1990, Bergen was elected to the Radio Hall of Fame, the same year that The Charlie McCarthy Show was selected as an honored program. A message in the closing credits dedicates The Muppet Movie (which featured Edgar and Charlie in their last screen appearance) to the memory and magic of Edgar. In 1991, the United States Postal Service honored him with a 29-cent commemorative stamp. Bergen was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame with three stars in 1960, for his contributions to television, motion pictures, and radio. The stars are located at 6425, 6766, and 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, respectively. February 16, 1904: #BOTD: #HBD! James Baskett, African American actor and singer, the first Black male performer to receive an Oscar, and the last adult actor to receive an Honorary Oscar for a single performance, for his portrayal of Uncle Remus in the 1946 Disney feature film Song Of The South in which he became famous for singing "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" (d. July 9, 1948) is #born James Franklin Baskett in Indianapolis, Indiana. He began his performing career in New York City where he joined up with Bill 'Mr. Bojangles' Robinson. Using the name Jimmie Baskette, he appeared with Louis Armstrong on Broadway in the 1929 black musical revue Hot Chocolates and in several all-black New York films, including Harlem is Heaven (1932). He later moved to Los Angeles, California, and had a supporting role in the film Straight to Heaven (1939), starring Nina Mae McKinney. In 1941 he voiced Fats Crow in the animated Disney film Dumbo, and he also had bit parts in several B movies, including that of Lazarus in Revenge of the Zombies (1943), a porter in The Heavenly Body (1944), and native tribal leader Orbon in Jungle Queen (1945). From 1944 until 1948, he was part of the cast of the Amos 'n' Andy Show live radio program as lawyer Gabby Gibson. In 1945, he auditioned for a bit part voicing one of the animals in the new Disney feature film Song of the South (1946), based on the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris. Walt Disney was impressed with Baskett's talent and hired him on the spot for the lead role of Uncle Remus. Baskett was also given the voice role of Brer Fox, one of the film's animated antagonists, and also filled in as the main animated protagonist, Brer Rabbit, in one sequence. This was one of the first Hollywood portrayals of a black actor as a non-comic character in a leading role in a film meant for general audiences. Baskett was prohibited from attending the film's premiere in Atlanta, Georgia, because Atlanta was racially segregated by law. Although Baskett was occasionally criticized for accepting such a "demeaning" role (most of his acting credits were that of African American stereotypes), his acting was almost universally praised, and columnist Hedda Hopper, along with Walt Disney, was one of the many journalists and personalities who declared that he should receive an Academy Award for his work. Baskett had been in poor health during the filming of Song of the South due to diabetes and he suffered a heart attack in December 1946 shortly after the film's release. His health continued to decline, and he was often unable to attend the Amos 'n' Andy radio show he was on, missing almost half of the 1947-1948 season. On July 9, 1948, during the show's summer hiatus, James Baskett died at his home of heart failure resulting from diabetes at age 44. He was survived by his wife Margaret and his mother Elizabeth. February 16, 1923: Great Discoveries Of Archaeology (Archeology): Ancient Egypt: New Kingdom: Eighteenth Dynasty: Tutankhamun: The Tomb Of Tutankhamun (Valley Of The Kings Tomb KV62): -- English archaeologist Howard Carter along with his patron Lord Carnarvon formally unseals the burial chamber of Pharaoh Tutankhamun with government officials in attendance. At the east end of the burial chamber was an open doorway to a fourth room, dubbed the treasury. It contained the canopic chest that housed Tutankhamun's embalmed organs. Carter had the entrance to this chamber boarded up so it would not be a distraction during the upcoming clearance of the burial chamber; it was only reopened in 1927. After a viewing period for the press and the general public, the tomb was closed for the season on February 26. On November 4, 1922 Howard Carter discovered King Tut's tomb in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, Egypt after several years of searching. The child-king Tutankhamen became pharaoh at age nine and died around 1352 B.C. at age 19. February 16, 1923: Recording Sessions: First Recordings: -- African American blues singer Bessie Smith makes her first recording, "Down Hearted Blues" for Columbia Records with piano accompaniment by Clarence Williams, which sells a historic 780,000 copies in the first six months, the first "hit" recording; because metrics were not yet available for accounting for a "hit", they were literally accounted for by the weight of the records, and her records were accounted for by the ton, hence the phrase to sell "a ton of records". Down Hearted Blues is a blues song composed by musician Lovie Austin, with lyrics by American jazz singer Alberta Hunter. The first line sets the theme for the song: "Gee but it's hard to love someone when that someone don't love you." Hunter sang it during her engagement at the Dreamland Cafe, in Chicago, where she performed with Joe "King" Oliver's band. The National Recording Preservation Board included Bessie Smith's recording in the inaugural National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2002. The board recognizes songs that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." In 2001, the Recording Industry Association of America, with the National Endowment for the Arts, included it at number 315 in the list of the Top 365 "Songs of the Century". The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame identified it as one of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock". In 2006, Smith's recording received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Today, February 16, 2026

February 16, 1931: #BOTD: #HBD! Otis Blackwell, African American rock 'n' roll singer and songwriter pioneer, responsible for composing many influential rock and roll hits including "Fever", "Great Balls Of Fire" and "Breathless" (recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis), "Hey Little Girl" (Dee Clark), "Don't Be Cruel", "All Shook Up" and "Return to Sender" (with Winfield Scott; recorded by Elvis Presley), and "Handy Man" (d. May 6, 2002) is #born in Brooklyn, New York. He learned to play the piano as a child and grew up listening to both R & B and country music. His first success was winning a local talent contest ("Amateur Night") at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in 1952. This led to a recording contract with RCA and then with Jay-Dee. His first release was his own composition "Daddy Rolling Stone", which became a favorite in Jamaica, where it was recorded by Derek Martin. The song later became part of the Who's mod repertoire. Enjoying some early recording and performing success, he found his first love was songwriting and by 1955 had settled into the groove that he would ride for decades. His first successes as a songwriter came in 1956, when Little Willie John's R & B hit with the sultry "Fever" was an even bigger pop success for Peggy Lee, and "Don't Be Cruel" began a highly profitable association with Elvis Presley. Blackwell was one of the leading African American figures of early rock and roll, although he was not well known by the public. His own records never cracked the Top 40, yet he wrote million-selling songs for Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dee Clark and others. He also recruited other songwriters to write for Presley, such as Winfield Scott. In the liner notes of Elvis' Golden Records (1958), Anne Fulchino, of RCA, wrote: "While sipping coffee, Steve Sholes pulled out a demonstration record of 'Don't Be Cruel' and told Elvis it was a new song written by Otis Blackwell, whom Elvis had long admired as a rhythm and blues artist. It took just a few bars to convince Presley that it was a perfect song for him, and he decided to cut it right away." Though Blackwell never met Presley in person, Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, asked Blackwell to appear in the Presley movie Girls! Girls! Girls!, for which he had written "Return to Sender", but a superstition about meeting Presley kept him from accepting. As the tide of rock and roll receded, Blackwell recorded R & B songs for numerous labels, including Atlantic, MGM and Epic. In later years, he was in semi-retirement, making only occasional live appearances. In the 1980s, Blackwell toured and recorded with the Smithereens as his backing band for both live shows and studio recordings. The partnership produced two self-funded albums, "Let's Talk About Us" and "From the Beginning", which were released independently on Blackwell's ROC-CO imprint. In 1991, Blackwell was paralyzed by a stroke. Three years later, Shanachie released the album Brace Yourself! February 16, 1934: The Interwar Period (The Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Austrian Civil War (German: Osterreichischer Burgerkrieg) (The February Uprising [German: Februarkampfe]): -- The Austrian Civil War ends when the Fatherland Front, the ruling Austrofascist political party established by Christian Social Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss as the only legally permitted party in the country, defeats the Social Democratic Party (SDAPO or SPO), the oldest extant political party in Austria, and its paramilitary organization Republikanischer Schutzbund (German: Republican Protection League), established in 1923 to secure power in the face of rising political radicalization after World War I. The Austrian Civil War was a series of skirmishes between Fascist and Socialist forces between February 12 and 16, 1934, in Austria. The clashes started in Linz and took place principally in the cities of Vienna, Graz, Bruck an der Mur, Judenburg, Wiener Neustadt and Steyr, but also in some other industrial cities of eastern and central Austria. British naval forces cornered the tanker and later the destroyer Cossack attacked the German ship and freed all the prisoners, killing eight German seamen with firearms and wounding ten others, five of them seriously. February 16, 1943: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Western Front Of World War II: The German Nuclear Weapons Program (German: Uranverein, "Uranium Club", Uranprojekt, "Uranium Project": The Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage (Bokmal: Tungtvannsaksjonen; Nynorsk: Tungtvassaksjonen) (The Telemark Raids): Operation Gunnerside: -- A team of Norwegian commandos trained by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) destroy the German heavy water production facilities at Telemark, Norway that had intended to help Nazi Germany build an atomic bomb; this was followed by Allied bombing raids, which caused the Germans to cease operations and attempt to move the remaining heavy water produced there to Germany. Thereafter, Norwegian resistance forces sank the ferry carrying that heavy water, the SF Hydro, on Lake Tinn. The Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage (Bokmal: Tungtvannsaksjonen; Nynorsk: Tungtvassaksjonen) was a series of Allied-led efforts to halt German heavy water production via hydroelectric plants in Nazi Germany-occupied Norway during World War II, involving both Norwegian commandos and Allied bombing raids. During the war, the Allies sought to inhibit the German development of nuclear weapons with the removal of heavy water and the destruction of heavy-water production plants. The Norwegian heavy water sabotage was aimed at the 60 MW Vemork power station at the Rjukan waterfall in Telemark. The hydroelectric power plant at Vemork was built in 1934. It was the world's first site to mass-produce heavy water (as a byproduct of nitrogen fixing), with a capacity of 12 tonnes per year. Before the German invasion of Norway on April 9, 1940, the French Deuxieme Bureau removed 185 kilograms (408 lb) of heavy water from the Vemork plant in then-neutral Norway. The plant's managing director agreed to lend France the heavy water for the duration of the war. The French transported it secretly to Oslo, then to Perth, Scotland, and then to France. The plant was still capable of producing heavy water, however, and the Allies were concerned that the Germans would use the facility to produce more heavy water. Between 1940 and 1944, a series of sabotage actions by the Norwegian resistance movement and Allied bombing ensured the destruction of the plant and the loss of its heavy water. These operations - code-named Grouse, Freshman, and Gunnerside - knocked the plant out of production in early 1943. In Operation Grouse, the SOE successfully placed an advance team of four Norwegians on the Hardanger Plateau above the plant on October 18, 1942. The brave but unsuccessful November 19, 1942 Operation Freshman was mounted the following month by British paratroopers, who were to rendezvous with the Operation Grouse Norwegians and proceed to Vemork. This attempt failed when the military gliders (and one of their tugs, a Handley Page Halifax) crashed short of their destination. Except for the crew of one Halifax bomber, all the participants were killed in the crashes or captured, interrogated and executed by the Gestapo. February 16, 1945: World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Pacific Ocean Theater Of World War II: The Philippines Campaign (1944-1945) (Battle Of The Philippines, Second Philippines Campaign, The Liberation Of The Philippines, Operation Musketeer I, II, and III): The Battle Of Corregidor (1945) (The Battle For The Recapture Of Corregidor): -- The Battle Of Corregidor begins as American amphibious forces land on Corregidor Island, located at the entrance of Manila Bay in the southwestern part of Luzon in the Philippines, which due to its location has historically been fortified with coastal artillery batteries to defend the entrance of Manila Bay and Manila itself from attacks by enemy warships, and was the site of the heroic last stand of American and Filipino forces during The Battle Of Corregidor some three years prior. The Battle Of Corregidor was fought February 16-26, 1945, and this time pitted the defending Japanese garrison on the island fortress against American forces who came to reclaim and liberate the island. The Japanese had captured the bastion from the United States Army Forces in the Far East during their 1942 invasion. The retaking of the island, officially named Fort Mills, along with the bloody battle to liberate Manila and the earlier recapture of the Bataan Peninsula, by invading U.S. forces from the occupying Japanese, marked the redemption of the American and Filipino surrender on 6 May 1942 and the subsequent fall of the Philippines. The surrender of Corregidor in 1942 and the ensuing fate of its 11,000 American and Filipino defenders led to a particular sense of moral purpose in General Douglas MacArthur, and as shown in the subsequent campaigns for the liberation of the Philippine archipelago, he showed no hesitation in committing the bulk of US and Philippine forces under his command. To the American soldier, Corregidor was more than a military objective; long before the campaign to recapture it, "The Rock" had become an important symbol in United States history as the last Pacific outpost of any size to fall to the enemy in the early stages of the Pacific War. Ice-T began his career as an underground rapper in the 1980s and was signed to Sire Records in 1987, when he released his debut album Rhyme Pays. The following year, he founded the record label Rhyme Syndicate Records (named after his collective of fellow hip-hop artists called the "Rhyme Syndicate") and released another album, Power (1988), which would go platinum. He also released several other albums that went gold, including The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech... Just Watch What You Say! (1989), O.G. Original Gangster (1991) and Home Invasion (1993). Ice-T co-founded the heavy metal band Body Count in 1990, which he introduced on O.G. Original Gangster, on the track titled "Body Count". The band released its self-titled debut album in 1992. Ice-T encountered controversy over his track "Cop Killer", the lyrics of which discussed killing police officers. He asked to be released from his contract with Warner Bros. Records, and his follow-up solo album, Home Invasion, was released through Priority Records. Ice-T released two more albums in the late 1990s and one in the 2000s before focusing on both his acting career and Body Count, who have released seven studio albums to date, the latest being 2020's Carnivore. As an actor, Ice-T played small parts in the films Breakin' (1984) and its sequels, Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo and Rappin' (1984 and 1985 respectively), before his major role debut, starring as police detective Scotty Appleton in New Jack City (1991). He received top billing for his role in Surviving the Game (1994) and continued to appear in small roles in TV series and other films throughout the 1990s. Since 2000, he has portrayed NYPD detective/sergeant Odafin Tutuola on the NBC police drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, making him the longest-running male series actor in history, according to Deadline.[3] A reality television show titled Ice Loves Coco ran for three seasons (2011-2013) on E!, featuring the home life of Ice-T and his wife Coco Austin. February 16, 1959: The History Of Cuba: The Cuban Revolution: The Consolidation Of The Cuban Revolution (Cuba Under Fidel Castro): The Politics Of Cuba: The Political Career Of Fidel Castro: -- Fidel Castro is sworn in as Premier of Cuba, replacing Jose Miro Cardona, after dictator Fulgencio Batista was overthrown on January 1. 1059 in the culmination of the Cuban Revolution. The Prime Minister of Cuba (Spanish: Primer Ministro de Cuba), known as the President of the Council of Ministers (Spanish: Presidente del Consejo de Ministros de Cuba) between 1976 and 2019, is the head of the Council of Ministers of Cuba. The office of Prime Minister was first instituted in 1940 in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of Cuba as amended in that year. The first Prime Minister of Cuba was Carlos Saladrigas Zayas (1900-1957), the nephew of former President Alfredo Zayas. The prime minister was also sometimes referred to as "premier". Between 1940 and 1959, Cuba saw fifteen changes of prime minister; Felix Lancis Sanchez exercised the role twice (1944-1945 and 1950-1951) while Fulgencio Batista held the position concurrently with that of President of Cuba for one month (April 1952) following a military coup. The title of the office was officially changed on 2 December 1976 when a new national constitution, restructuring the government, came into force. Under that constitution, the post of President was abolished and replaced by a Soviet-style collective head of state, the Council of State, elected by the National Assembly of People's Power. However, unlike the USSR's arrangements, where the Chairmen of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet and the Council of Ministers were distinct posts, the Cuban Council of Ministers was chaired by the same person as the Council of State. Furthermore, unlike English and Russian, Spanish does not distinguish between the terms "chairman" and "president", translating both as "presidente". On February 24, 2019, Cuba's current constitution was adopted in a referendum. Under it, the government was again re-organized, and the posts of President and Prime Minister were restored. Manuel Marrero was named prime minister for a 5-year term by President Miguel Diaz-Canel on 21 December 2019, under the new constitutional provisions, and was approved unanimously by the National Assembly to serve the same day. Even though the new post of Prime Minister was created, Raul Castro is still indirectly the man in charge as Chairman of the Cuban Communist Party and Honorary Supreme Commander of the Cuban Armed Forces. February 16, 1960: Circumnavigation: Submerged Navigation: Operation Sandblast: -- The U.S. Navy nuclear submarine USS Triton begins Operation Sandblast when she sets sail from New London, Connecticut to begin the first submerged circumnavigation of the globe on February 24. Triton's overall navigational track during Operation Sandblast generally followed that of the Spanish expedition that achieved the first circumnavigation of the world, started under the command of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and completed by Spanish explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano from 1519 to 1522. Operation Sandblast was the code name for the first submerged circumnavigation of the world, executed by the United States Navy nuclear-powered radar picket submarine USS Triton (SSRN-586) in 1960 under the command of Captain Edward L. Beach Jr.. The New York Times described Triton's submerged circumnavigation of the Earth as "a triumph of human prowess and engineering skill, a feat which the United States Navy can rank as one of its bright victories in man's ultimate conquest of the seas." The circumnavigation took place between February 24 and April 25, 1960, covering 26,723 nautical miles (49,491 km; 30,752 mi) over 60 days and 21 hours. The route began and ended at the St. Peter and Paul Rocks (The Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago) in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean near the Equator. During the voyage, Triton crossed the Equator four times while maintaining an average speed of 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph). The initial impetus for Operation Sandblast was to increase American technological and scientific prestige before the May 1960 Paris Summit between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. It also provided a high-profile public demonstration of the capability of U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarines to carry out long-range submerged operations independent of external support and undetected by hostile forces, presaging the initial deployment of the Navy's Polaris ballistic missile submarines later in 1960. Finally, Operation Sandblast gathered extensive oceanographic, hydrographic, gravimetric, geophysical, and psychological data during Triton's circumnavigation. Official celebrations were cancelled for Operation Sandblast following the diplomatic furor arising from the 1960 U-2 incident in which a U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union in early May. However, Triton did receive the Presidential Unit Citation with a special clasp in the form of a golden replica of the globe in recognition of the successful completion of its mission, and Captain Beach received the Legion of Merit for his role as Triton's commanding officer. In 1961, Beach received the Magellanic Premium from the American Philosophical Society, the United States' oldest and most prestigious scientific award in "recognition of his navigation of the U.S. submarine Triton around the globe." February 16: National Almond Day: -- An annual recognition of the versatile and healthful almond, the small but mighty nut is packed with protein and healthy fats, making it a great snack to keep you fueled throughout the day. This delicious nut, a bite-sized little nut common in trail mix and other breakfast and snack recipes, is native to the Middle East and thrives in warm, dry climates with mild winters. The day celebrates the benefits and uses of almonds. Whether you are eating them by themselves, toss them in a salad, ground them into flour, use them for a healthy alternative to milk, or for pasta, flour, butter, oil, meal, or just munch on a few for an afternoon snack, almonds offer a delicious flavor along with many health benefits. Almonds are one of the most versatile and delicious foods on the market, packed with vitamin E, magnesium, and fiber, are wonderfully healthy and may even help fight heart disease. It's generally believed and agreed by historians (and food historians in particular) that almonds were one of the earliest cultivated foods by mankind. Almonds are mentioned as far back in history as the Bible! Although their first place of origin is debated, almonds were thought to have first been cultivated in China and Central Asia. While traveling the Silk Road between Asia and the Mediterranean, explorers were said to snack on almonds during the long travel times. As explorers settled in the Mediterranean region, the trees began to grow in the area. As the trees spread throughout Europe, many of them clustered in Spain and Italy. Almonds eventually made their journey to the United States in the mid-1700s. Historians believe they made their appearance on the trade ship brought to the US from Spain by the Franciscan Padres. The trees died out in the United States quite quickly as the soil and cultivation knowledge to keep the trees alive was inadequate. It was not until the 1800's that almond trees were successfully grown and harvested in the States. By the end of the 1800s, the Sacramento and San Joaquin areas of California became the United State's biggest almond producers. Today, almonds symbolize a variety of things. The Bible tells the story of the rod that blossomed and bore almonds, making them a divine religious symbol. The early Romans gifted almonds to family and friends as fertility charms. These gifts were typically given at weddings. Today, sugared or frosted almonds are often given at American weddings to guests as a sign of happiness, wealth, and good fortune. National Almond Day was founded as a time to show appreciation for these power-packed nuts and to encourage you to make it a habit of including them in your life! https://store.earthstation1.com/almonds-and-raisins-a-history-of-yiddish-cinema-dvd-mp4-us4.html

February 16: Do A Grouch A Favor Day: -- For those with a grouch in their lives - which is actually most of us - there is a day for that! Help a very grumpy person turn their mood around. So how do we help them experience the sweeter side of life? Grouch, grump, cross, irritable. These people go by many adjectives and appear almost everywhere. Most of us have a grouch in our life, whether it is a neighbor, a friend, a colleague, or even that guy you pass at the train station each morning. Many of us are also guilty of being grumps ourselves when the going gets tough. This persona is so common, various ancient Greek plays feature a 'grump', a character so grouchy that they have no more purpose than to amuse us. History is also full of such grumpy, grouchy people, as evidenced by all the stories about great visionaries. Newton is said to have held obsessive grudges against people, Beethoven became more recalcitrant upon losing his hearing, and even our own American presidents have had their moments. It's not just the greats, either. We can only assume regular people have been, and continue to be, grouchy. After all, they had ample circumstances to be that way - the Great Depression, the World Wars, and even the financial crash of 2008. This day comes at a time when the world is putting much stock into being positive. Billion-dollar book sales attest to the fact that self-help is a booming industry. Happiness experts and mindfulness apps regularly coax new subscribers into seeking inner peace and satisfaction. Even the U.S. Army is training its soldiers in positive psychology. Meanwhile, countries are judged by their 'happiness index', which rivals their G.D.P., if not surpasses it. While we cannot pinpoint the origins of this day, we rather think this might be the brainchild of someone who is a grouch and secretly wants to be the recipient of nice gestures from people. That or Big Bird from "Sesame Street" is trying to stop Oscar the Grouch from grumbling again. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-joe-pyne-show-dvd-old-time-shock-tv-talk-shows.html

February 16: Restoration Of The State Day In Lithuania (State Restoration Day [Lithuania]): -- The European Civil War: World War I: The First European War (The European Theater Of World War I): The Aftermath Of World War I: Lithuania: The History Of Lithuania: The Act Of Independence Of Lithuania ( (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Nepriklausomybes Aktas) (The Act Of February 16th, The Lithuanian Resolution On Independence [Lithuanian: Lietuvos Nepriklausomybes Nutarimas], Restoration Of The State Day In Lithuania, State Restoration Day): -- The Act Of Independence Of Lithuania, which declared Lithuania an independent democratic state with Vilnius as its capital, a state independent from Russia and thereby restoring of the independent State of Lithuania, is signed by The Council of Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Taryba; German: Litauischer Staatsrat; Polish: Rada Litewska), a council of twenty men of different ages, social status, professions, and political affiliations chaired by Jonas Basanavicius that was granted executive authority over the Lithuanian people and entrusted to establish an independent Lithuanian state at the September 18- 23, 1917 Vilnius Conference ( (Lithuanian: Vilniaus Konferencija) (Vilnius National Conference), the conference that began the process of establishing a Lithuanian state based on ethnic identity and language that would be independent of the Russian Empire, Poland, and the German Empire. The act was signed on the anniversary of The Battle Of Karuse (The Battle On The Ice), fought between the Grand Duchy Of Lithuania, the sovereign Lithuanian successor state of The Kingdom Of Lithuania which lasted from the 13th century to the late 18th century when the territory was suppressed during the 1795 partitions of Poland-Lithuania, and the Livonian Order branch of the Teutonic Order on the frozen Baltic Sea between the island of Muhu and the mainland, where he Lithuanians achieved a decisive victory; the battle, named after the village of Karuse, was the fifth-largest defeat of the Livonian or Teutonic Orders in the 13th century. The Act Of February 16 was the result of a series of resolutions on the issue, including one issued by The Vilnius Conference and The Act Of January 8. The path to the Act was long and complex because the German Empire exerted pressure on the Council to form an alliance. The Council had to carefully maneuver between the Germans, whose troops were present in Lithuania, and the demands of the Lithuanian people. The immediate effects of the announcement of Lithuania's re-establishment of independence were limited. Publication of the Act was prohibited by the German authorities, and the text was distributed and printed illegally. The work of the Council was hindered, and Germans remained in control over Lithuania. The situation changed only when Germany lost World War I in the fall of 1918. In November 1918 the first Cabinet of Lithuania was formed, and the Council of Lithuania gained control over the territory of Lithuania. Independent Lithuania, although it would soon be battling the Wars of Independence, became a reality. The Act Of Independence is the legal basis for the existence of modern Lithuania, both during the interwar period and since 1990. The Act formulated the basic constitutional principles that were and still are followed by all Constitutions of Lithuania. The Act itself was a key element in the foundation of Lithuania's re-establishment of independence in 1990. Lithuania, breaking away from the Soviet Union, stressed that it was simply re-establishing the independent state that existed between the world wars and that the Act never lost its legal power. State Restoration Day is among the two Lithuanian Independence Day celebrations is the Restoration of the State Day in Lithuania, which is celebrated every February 16. It is a time when the country is adorned with the national colors: yellow, green, and red. Not many nations get to have two independence days. As Lithuania was once a sovereign nation and the largest in Europe as far back as the 13th century, its freedom from foreign rule is of even greater significance since it restores its lost glory. Restoration of the State Day in Lithuania is commonly confused with Independence Restoration Day. Both these days are public holidays and are regarded as independence days in the country. However, the former signifies the restoration of the lost glory of the state from the Germans, while the latter celebrates the restoration of independence from the Soviet Union. Earlier in the 13th century and up until the late 18th century, Lithuania was a sovereign European nation with a rich historical background. However, the Russian Empire took over the reins of the country and retained its hold on it until the First World War. Between 1914 and 1917, the advancing German forces of W.W.I. took control of Lithuania, and when the Russians launched counterattacks on the nation, the Germans gave Lithuanians a choice to side with either them or the Russians, hoping that the citizens would choose them. However, the brave Lithuanians chose neither Germany nor Russia and instead declared themselves independent from German rule on February 16, 1918. This event marked Lithuania's first independence. Since Lithuania had been a sovereign nation before then, the day was named Restoration of the State Day in Lithuania, signifying their restored sovereignty. From then on, the country celebrated its independence every February 16. Unfortunately for them, their independence was short-lived and only lasted for 22 years before the Soviet Union took over the country in W.W.II. This invariably makes the country one of the few to be occupied by the Russians twice. The Russians continued to rule the nation even after the end of W.W.II, until when Lithuanians joined hands with Estonians to stage demonstrations and demand another independence. In 1990, their struggles were rewarded and they regained their freedom on March 16 - adopting yet again another Independence Day. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-great-war-dvd-set-1964-wwi-tv-series-26-shows-1964266.html

It was later discovered that the temperature of the exosphere increased after geomagnetic disturbances in the ionosphere, peaking around five hours after each event. With three years of data, scientists were able to discern a seasonal variation to the exosphere's density, with an increase of 25% observed in winter over summer at a reference latitude of 39dg. The delay in the temperature increase resulting from magnetic disturbances was further refined to 5.2, plus or minus 0.4 hours. Explorer 9 was launched to study the density and composition of the upper thermosphere and lower exosphere. It was a reflight of the failed S-56 mission, and consisted of a 7 kg (15 lb), 3.66 m (12.0 ft) balloon which was deployed into a medium Earth orbit. The mission was conducted by NASA's Langley Research Center. The spacecraft consisted of alternating layers of aluminium foil and Mylar polyester film. Uniformly distributed over the aluminium surface were 5.1 cm-diameter dots of white paint for thermal control. The sphere was packed in a tube 21.6 cm in diameter and 48.3 cm long and mounted in the nose of the fourth stage of its Scout X-1 launch vehicle. Explorer 9 was deployed into a highly elliptical orbit with an apogee of 2,225 km (1,383 mi), a perigee of 545 km (339 mi), 38.91 dg of inclination from the Earth's equator and an orbital period of 118.6 minutes. It was assigned the Harvard designation (the international identifier assigned to artificial objects in space used at the time, later replaced by the International Designator or COSPAR ID system) of 1961 Delta 1. Upon separation of the fourth stage, the sphere was inflated by a nitrogen gas bottle, and a separation spring ejected it out into its own orbit. The two hemispheres of aluminium foil were separated with a gap of Mylar at the spacecraft's equator, and served as the antenna. A 136 MHz, 15 mW beacon was carried for tracking purposes, but the beacon failed on the first orbit and the SAO Baker-Nunn camera network had to be relied upon for tracking. Power was supplied by solar cells and rechargeable batteries. The second of six identical air density research satellites to be launched, Explorer 9 was the first to successfully reach orbit. It was still operational when the next satellite in the series, Explorer 19, was launched, allowing simultaneous readings to be taken and compared. Careful and continuous photographic observation of the satellite allowed scientists to conduct an unprecedented survey of the Earth's exosphere. Explorer 9 decayed from orbit on April 9, 1964. A replica of the spacecraft, possibly a flight backup, is currently located in the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, although it is not on display. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-satellite-sky-dvd-cold-war-space-race-films.html

He was cast in dozens of productions on the New York stage, appeared in more than two dozen television programs, and acted in more than fifty feature films. Adept at both drama and musicals on the stage, he originated the role of Jud Fry in the original 1943 run of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma!, and also portrayed the prosecuting attorney in the 1957 stage production of Compulsion. Many of his early feature films were of the noir genre in which he often played villains, such as Eddie Harwood in The Blue Dahlia and the sadistic Captain Francis Thompson in Two Years Before the Mast (both 1946). Da Silva's characterization of historic figures are among some of his most notable work: he was Lincoln's brawling friend Jack Armstrong in both play (1939) and film (1940) versions of Abe Lincoln in Illinois written by Robert Sherwood; Benjamin Franklin in the 1969-1972 stage musical 1776 and a reprisal of the role for the 1972 film version of the production; Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in The Missiles of October (1974); Franklin D. February 16, 1970: #DOTD: #RIP: William G. Sebold, United States citizen who was coerced into becoming a spy when he visited Germany after being pressured by several high-ranking Nazi members (b. March 10, 1899) #dies at Napa State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in Napa, California, of a heart attack at age 70. He is buried at Queen Of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette, California. Born Gottlieb Adolf Wilhelm Sebold in Mulheim, Germany, Sebold informed the American Consul General in Cologne, before being sent by the Germans on his spy mission to the United States, that he had been blackmailed by members of the German military intelligence service Abwehr to become an espionage agent for Germany by threatening to expose his having omitted from his U. S. citizenship application the fact that he had served time in a German jail. He agreed to become a double agent and helped the FBI gather evidence. With the assistance of another German agent, Fritz Joubert Duquesne, he recruited 33 agents that became known as the Duquesne Spy Ring. For nearly two years, the FBI ran a shortwave radio station in New York for the ring. They learned what information Germany was sending its spies in the United States and controlled what was sent to Germany. In June 1941, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested all of the agents, and on January 2, 1942, the FBI sentenced 33 members of the Duquesne Spy Ring to serve a total of over 300 years in prison in the largest espionage case in United States history. The Duquesne Spy Ring is the largest espionage case in the United States history that ended in convictions. A total of 33 members of a German espionage network headed by Frederick "Fritz" Joubert Duquesne were convicted after a lengthy investigation by the FBI. Of those indicted, 19 pleaded guilty. The remaining 14 were brought to jury trial in Federal District Court, Brooklyn, New York, on September 3, 1941; all were found guilty on December 13, 1941. The agents who formed the Duquesne Ring were placed in key jobs in the United States to get information that could be used in the event of war and to carry out acts of sabotage: one opened a restaurant and used his position to get information from his customers; another worked on an airline so that he could report Allied ships that were crossing the Atlantic Ocean; others worked as delivery people as a cover for carrying secret messages. Sebold's success as a counterespionage agent was demonstrated by the successful prosecution of the German agents. One German spymaster later commented the ring's roundup delivered "the death blow" to their espionage efforts in the United States. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover called his concerted FBI swoop on Duquesne's ring the greatest spy roundup in U.S. history. The 1945 film The House on 92nd Street was a thinly disguised version of the Duquesne Spy Ring saga of 1941. https://store.earthstation1.com/gmen-the-rise-of-j-edgar-hoover-dvd.html

February 16, 1943: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Eastern Front Of World War II (The Great Patriotic War, The German-Soviet War): The Battles Of Kharkov: The Third Battle of Kharkov (The Donets Campaign, The Donbas And Kharkov Operations): -- Despite Adolf Hitler's orders to hold the city of Kharkov against the forces of Red Army's Operation Star launched on February 2, Kharkov is abandoned by German forces, which included the headquarters of Army Group South and Luftflotte 4 (Air Fleet Four), and the city was recaptured by the Red Army as part of their Operation Star. Hitler immediately flew to Field Marshal Erich von Manstein's headquarters at Zaporizhia. Manstein informed him that an immediate counterattack on Kharkov would be fruitless, but that he could successfully attack the overextended Soviet flank with his five Panzer corps, and recapture the city later. On February 19, Soviet armored units broke through the German lines and approached the city. In view of the worsening situation, Hitler gave Manstein operational freedom. When Hitler departed, the Soviet forces were only some 30 kilometers (19 mi) away from the airfield, and Manstein commenced what would become known as The Third Battle Of Kharkov, a series of battles undertaken by the German Army Group South against the Red Army around the city of Kharkov (or Kharkiv) between February 19 and March 15, 1943. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-unknown-war-complete-tv-series-soviet-union-wwii-10-dvd-s10.html

The song charted on both the R & B and pop charts. In 1962, Jackson's recording of the Burt Bacharach-Bob Hilliard song "Any Day Now" became a huge hit and his signature song. His popularity in the 1960s prompted him to buy the time on his contract from Scepter and move to Motown Records. A decision he later commented upon as "one of the worst mistakes I ever made in my life"There he recorded a few successful singles, including "Honey Come Back." He later recorded for All Platinum and other labels, but with minimal success. After meeting producer/composer Charles Wallert at the Third Annual Beach Music Awards, the two collaborated to record "How Long Have You Been Loving Me" on Carolina Records. In 1998, Jackson teamed with longtime friend Dionne Warwick to record "If I Let Myself Go", arranged as a duet by Wallert for Wave Entertainment. The recording received critical acclaim and charted at number 19 on the Gavin Adult Contemporary Charts.
